Glass Block Window Retrofit Ideas

Glass block can be a great low cost solution to transform your old single pane windows to a more modern look. In most cases a frameless glass block window is a great fit to replace your existing wood or aluminum clad windows. Stack & Grout - Glass Block Installation

The Stack & Grout System is by far the easiest glass block installation system on the market. Some have also referred to this as the Pro Vantage system but the Stack & Grout system was the original! This system takes the place of your conventional mortar masonry construction and replaces it with the ease of vinyl spacers glued together with silicone. The face joints are then finished with grout as a last step to give the look and feel of a traditional glass block wall without the need of a masonry expert.

Apply silicone to the block
to adhere the spacers

Apply more silicone to the
spacer to prep for the next block

Slide next block into the silicone and
tight to the block before it and repeat
the process until the row is complete

To start the second row you will
anchor the spacer to the wall and
repeat the first 3 steps as before

To complete the wall you will use a
Mapei Ultra Color grout after the silicone
has had a chance to cure at least 24 hours

Last but not least you will wipe the face
of the blocks with a clean sponge until
all the excess grout has been removed
and the joints are smooth to finish

How to Turn ‘Dead’ Attic Space into a Beautiful Walk In Glass Block Shower

One of our frequent customers (and an expert tile installer) created a beautiful bathroom suite out of what most would consider ‘dead’, unusable space in this early 1900’s home in Seattle. Capitalizing on the dormer space in this attic, he constructed a walk-in glass block shower using Wedi modular shower system components and prefabricated modular glass block sections.

The Wedi shower pan system was ideal for this application because of its light weight, and 100% waterproof construction. Being an older home, a traditional mortar shower pan would have stretched the limits of the structure’s strength. Having the shower pan components be 100% waterproof was extremely important because of the fact that this shower is on the uppermost floor of the house. A leak here would be disastrous for the lower floors of the house.

Prefabricated modular glass block sections worked great for this application because of the speed at which they can be installed, and minimal set up required for the installation. A traditional mortar build would require space to spread out so that the installer could have their materials close at hand, easy access to water for mixing mortar, and space for workers to move around each other. With the tight working space in this bathroom, the prefabricated sections could be brought up to the shower one two-row section at a time and anchored in place. When it came time to grout, a small bucket of grout is all that is needed to finish the joints.

Shower Wall -

Constructing a glass block shower wall is a breeze with the Stack & Grout system. Let a Seattle Glass Block sales associate assist you in building a kit that contains all of the vinyl spacers, silicone, and panel anchors that you need. When used in conjunction with our Vinyl Curb Components or Layout Cards, you can build a shower pan and have a glass block wall that fits the curb perfectly.

Lighted Glass Blocks as Holiday Decorations

Glass block is a material that is transformed by light. A popular holiday season craft is to fill a glass block with Christmas lights. The block can then be adorned with ribbons or bows, or be left as is. When plugged in, these playful blocks positively glow with bright, warm light.

How to Install Frameless Glass Block Windows

Seattle Glass Block offers prefabricated Frameless Panels that can be installed to fit flush to your interior finish or exterior siding, depending on your preference.

Panels that measure greater than 12 ft² are split into modular panels for ease of installation. Below is a helpful installation guide for Split Frameless Panels.

1) Split Frameless Panels come with a Split Kit that contains glass block silicone, panel anchors, and grout if your panel has grouted face joints.

Installation Kits are available for Frameless Panels. These kits consist of a can of minimal expansion foam and a pack of wooden shims.

2) Slide panel anchors into ends of vinyl spacer located on the top of the lower panel section. Shim the first panel into prepared opening sized per Net Opening dimensions provided by SGB. This should leave a ¼” space around the perimter of the panel. Place shims at joint line between blocks as shown. This area is stronger and will not affect the block alignment.

Once panel is plumb and level, screw panel anchors to framework. Run two beads of silicone along the spacer on top of the panel.

3) Shim the upper panel into place on top of the first panel. Use wooden shims to ensure upper panel is plumb and level.

Inject minimal expansion foam into space between panels and framed opening. When the foam has dried, cut away any excess foam and the shims. Caulk over the exterior perimter joint. The caulking can act as the finishing joint or you can place a wood trim over the caulk joint.

Finish the face joint between the two panels with silicone or grout as provided with the split kit.

Wheel Chair Accessible Shower with Dual Drain Shower Pan & Glass Block Walls

This customer came in to our showroom in Woodinville, WA to work on a custom shower. The needs of this client required a dual drain shower and an entrance that would accommodate the footrests of the wheelchair. We increased the curb height to be sure the wheelchair would have clearance into the shower and not come in contact with the glass block. We then used the Arque block from Pittsburgh Corning to create a slight return on each of the shower walls. By adding the Arque block to each wall, we were able to add some shape which was visually appealing and also helps to keep the water spray in the shower area.

We assembled the entire kit in just 9 calendar days; two modular glass block panels complete with Style Caps and a custom dual drain wedi shower pan. The preassembled panels and custom shower pan were palletized, picked up, and ready to be installed by his contractor. Structural Glass Stair with Glass Railing

This glass staircase was constructed with a single support beam down the center and a four sided steel tray for the glass to sit on. The result was as staircase that allows light to flow freely though it and around it transforming the staircase from an obstruction to a center piece.

The steel supports can be seen clearly in the photo below and the end result to the right is nothing short of impressive.

Ready-4-Tile Glass Block Shower Kit using a Custom wedi Riolito Channel Drain Shower Pan

For this Ready-4-Tile shower kit the 4x8 glass blocks were used as the primary material to create a stunning walk-in shower that maximizes light transmission throughout the entire bathroom. The radius section uses 4x8 glass block and our ratcheting vinyl stack spacer for the larger of the two walls. The smaller wall needed to have a straight section for 34” before creating a return. To maintain the needed dimension of this section of the wall we used the Tridron block from Pittsburgh Corning which created a 45° return. Each wall was finished using the 6x8 Endblock and capped with our glass Style Caps.

The shower base utilizes the wedi Riolito shower pan with extensions to create the large walk in design. The Riolito pan was selected for its unique channel drain feature. The channel drain covers are available in 3 options to fit your needs.

This project is in Montana and the entire kit was palletized and shipped with a national freight carrier. We get great national rates from our freight carrier and can provide you with a rate quote on your next shower kit.

Barrier Free/ADA Shower Installations using the wedi Shower Systems

Courtesy of wedi Tech Tips from July 2007 & October 2008 we have compiled two ways to achieve a Barrier Free and ADA compliant shower system. The first example illustrates a floor level installation and doesn't require recessing the subfloor. The second example illustrates a recessed subfloor application. To get started you will need to know the basics about ADA compliant showers.

A couple key requirements for a truly ADA compliant shower installation:

Shower enclosures greater than 36" x 36 but less than 36" x 60" can include a curb with a maximum height of 1/2" above floor level (bathroom or shower pan)
Shower enclosures greater than or equal to 36" x 60" must be curbless; no further specification. Ramps must meet a requirement of having a slope 1 over 12 inches.

The following wedi ramps are both ADA compliant and offer great solutions:

wedi Item# 073736517 - Space saving and 1/12 inch slope requirement for shower entrances met.

wedi Item# 011300058 - ADA Compliant for all wheelchair accessible showers where longer ramps are needed.

Floor level Installation of wedi Fundo Shower Systems Without Recessing The Subfloor

Picture 1:

wedi Fundo 3 ft x 5 ft Fundo Shower Pan is installed on wooden subfloor and wedi 1-1/2" thick building panel is used to raise the tile ready floor height to shower pan height. It covers and waterproofs the surrounding floor area. The flat building panels are notched to connect to the 1/2" x 1/2" shower pan channel notch. All connections are sealed with wedi Joint Sealant.

The whole floor is covered with 1-1/2" thick building panels. A wedi Balco Pre-Sloped Extension Panel must be used where a slope is required.

The shower are is tiled using large format tiles cut properly considering the sloped field of the wedi Fundo Shower Pan.

Floor level Installation of wedi Fundo Shower Systems With Recessed Subfloor

Gutted walls, floor joists to be lowered and after floor joists get properly reinforced and new plywood subfloor installed it will be ready for the new wedi shower pan.

Picture 2:

wedi Fundo shower base and 1/2" wedi wallboard are installed. No curb was used for this shower and waterproofing covers the floor surrounding the shower and is overlapping into the wedi base. Where the floor height allows, the waterproof wedi building panel 1/4" or 1/2" can be used instead of a liquid membrane as shown in this picture. This way the surface can be leveled, provides insulating value and an excellent cementitious bond surface for tile and modified tile adhesive.

Northwest Style Staircase with Structural Glass Stair Treads

This residential staircase incorporated glass as the main component to allow light to flow from the skylight above to all the living spaces below. The glass stair treads were engineered to allow for only 2 sided support, and as a result created a staircase that appears almost transparent.

The stair treads are comprised of at least 3 layers of low iron glass with a layer of rain pattern glass to offer some texture and moderate privacy. The top surface of the glass incorporates a traction control layer made of a ceramic frit that has been baked on to the top surface. The ceramic frit is an ideal element to allow for traction control but is also translucent and not to abrasive for socks or bare feet.

Custom Staircase with Laminated Glass Treads - Private Residence Bellingham WA

This custom glass staircase is ideal for this space as it keeps everything feeling open and light at the entry to this custom home.

Since each stair tread was required to span approximately 46" with only 2-sided support it was important to fabricate the glass to handle the load. The steel stringers were also notched to accept the glass and to elimate any chance that these treads might pivot when walked on.

These stairs are so clear you almost get a feeling of walking on air as you step off the second floor and onto the glass stairs below.

Custom Glass Block Shower Pan Using Wedi Riolito Trench Drain System

This customer was looking for a remarkable shower. He came to us wanting a curbless, radius, walk-in shower with an open design that didn’t obstruct his exterior view. wedi & Pittsburgh Corning products were used to provide the customer with a custom shower design to fit his needs. Using a large radius as the template we designed the glass block shower to follow the radius and gradually step down so the customer could maintain his exterior view. A channel drain was desired for the shower so we used the wedi Riolito shower pan and extensions to create the custom radius shower pan as pictured below. Even with the large footprint of 71” by 92” the shower pan installs in just a few hours and can be ready for tile shortly thereafter.

Glass Block Shower Maintenance Tips

We have compiled some easy to follow suggestions to keep your glass block looking as beautiful as the day it was installed.

Cleaning

Use any non-abrasive cleaner. The new spray and rinse products will work well and will not harm the glass block or grout joints. Windex used with a terry towel also work in areas where rinsing is not applicable. For cleaning your grout joints bleach works very well.

*Glass Sealers

Seattle Glass Block carries a great glass sealer called Aquapel. When applied, this product acts much like the automotive glass sealer Rainex.

Glass sealers work to keep your glass clear of unwanted soap film and hard water spots. Under magnification, glass surfaces have porous hills and valleys. Aquapel seals by actually bonding to the glass, filling the pores and keeping your glass clean for a longer period of time. A single application can last for years. Aquapel makes this maintenance of cleaning your glass easy and comes with it's own applicator. After thoroughly cleaning the glass surface, simply apply to the glass being careful to ensure full coverage. Within 15 minutes, remove excess with a clean dry cloth. One application will approximately do 3ft x 7ft area.

*Grout Sealers

We recommend using surface sealers. These types of grout sealers will fill pores and put a shell like coating over your grout, to protect it a make it easy to clean. We carry a 4 ounce grout sealer that will cover about 80 square feet of grouted glass block walls.

Silicone sealers and penetrating sealers do little to help make the grout easier to clean, and actually need to be re-applied frequently.

Surface sealers will last years with one application. The best way to apply surface sealers is to use a small paintbrush and apply the sealant to the grout joints so that is goes on thick. Go over all the vertical joints then horizontal to assure no areas are missed. Any excess that gets on glass should be wiped off with a dry towel or rag. After the first application is dry, it is recommended to repeat the process to ensure generous application and complete coverage.

Seattle Glass Block supplied 8x8x3 VISTABRIK® and 8x8x3 VISTABRIK® Stipple blocks to the masons constructing the Beacon Hill Station for Sound Transit's LINK Light Rail. Thousands of glass blocks were used throughout the rail station; in the entry façade, above the elevator banks, and lining the stairs. The blocks lining the stairs and above the elevators are back-lit to illuminate the ticketing concourse with a warm, welcoming glow. VISTABRIK® Stipple blocks were fabricated in tandem with 8x8x4 Decora blocks for two-block accents mounted in the masonry wall below the main VISTABRIK® walls.

VISTABRIK® was selected for this project for its durability, longevity, and ease of maintenance. VISTABRIKs® are impact resistant and virtually unbreakable, easily resisting thrown objects and vandalism. The smooth surface of the block aids in quick removal of graffiti and resists damage from chemicals and cleaning compounds. VISTABRIKs® are made of three inches of solid glass, which acts as a barrier to unwanted sounds.

Installing Prefabricated Glass Block Walls

Seattle Glass Block offers many solutions for contractors and homeowners alike to make the installation of custom glass block shower walls as straightforward and efficient as possible. One of our most popular installation methods is to use prefabricated, modular panels. Using our Stack & Grout® vinyl and silicone assembly system, Seattle Glass Block can produce shower walls or windows in modular sections that are split into pieces that measure 12 square feet or smaller for ease of handling. 1. Your modular glass block wall should be received in good condition. In addition to the glass block wall, you should also receive a ‘Split Kit’ that contains silicone for gluing the panels together, Panel Anchors for attaching the modular sections to the wall at the jamb, and grout for finishing the face joints. The kit shown also incorporates a wedi® Ready 4 Tile® shower pan.

2. Install panel anchors into top horizontal spacer on each modular wall section, except for the top panel. Run ½” bead of silicone at centerline of where panel will sit on the curb, and a ½” bead of silicone up the jamb to the height of the base panel. Use a larger bead of silicone if your framed wall leans in. Set panel on curb and push into framed wall until it is the desired distance from wall (1/8” or more if wall leans in). Plumb and level panel, then drive screw through upper hole. If anchoring through stone or tile, pre-drill with a 5/32” masonry bit. Once the first screw is in place, check your panel again for plumb, if a small adjustment is needed, the panel can be moved, and will pivot on the upper screw. When perfectly plumb, anchor with second lower screw.

3. Apply two-¼” beads of silicone to the top of the spacer on the first panel and a ½” bead to the wall the height of the second panel.

4. Place the second panel on top of the first and push into the wall until the vertical joints line up. (Tip…if the second panel is hitting the anchor at the wall and the vertical joints don’t line up; pry the first panel out away from the wall until they do.) Repeat steps on all sections but the top panel.

5. On the top panel (which will not have an anchor), apply two-¼” beads of silicone to the top of the spacer on the second to last panel, and a ½” bead up the wall to the height of the top panel. Since this panel will not have an anchor, it will need to be braced while the silicone cures to ensure that the panel is plumb.

Note: Straight panel configurations may require a temporary support and overnight drying time prior to grouting

Now you are ready to finish the face joints with the grout provided in the 'Split Kit'

wedi TECH TIP - Shower Bench Construction Using Structural 2" wedi Board

The following wedi tech tech illustrates just how easy it is to build a shower bench with just the 2" structural wedi board, some wedi sealant, and some modified thinset.

Picture 1: Measure and cut the bench support panels and miter the edges. This allows for a perfect connection of foam-to-foam edges in a bead of wedi joint sealant. The wedi building panel top edges should also be sloped 1/4" per ft. to allow water to run down the bench towards the floor drain (the front panel is cut shorter than the back panel and the side panels are cut down in a slope).

Picture 2: Glue the support panels against the installed wedi building panels on the wall and against the wedi Fundo shower pan on the floor using modified thinset mortar. All bench pieces are fastened to each other using a continuously applied 1/2" bead of wedi joint sealant.

Picture 3: Setup a vertical center support for every 20 inches of bench length.

Picture 4: Setup a top panel to finish the bench. Use the wedi joint sealant to cover all seams between the bench, wall, and floor.

Picture 5: Use a putty knife to cover and smooth the wedi joint sealant over the seams. The 4ft. bench is now complete, approximate construction time is 1 hour.

Bathroom Remodel using Frameless Glass Block Window with Decora LX Pattern

This project was a total Do-It-Yourself remodel project by a husband and wife team in the Seattle area, and our pre-fabricated frameless glass block window was one small component used to transform their bathroom from outdated to outstanding!

Our frameless panels are very quick and easy to install and with the use of the Decora LX glass block this window offers maximum privacy while still providing a great source of daylight to the room. In this case the face joints of the window were finished with silicone allowing them to virtually disappear, and making maintenance a breeze. By trimming the perpendicular walls the same as the glass block, these homeowners made this room flow together as if the glass block has always been a part of the original design.

One great thing about glass block is that it can change in color slightly depending on the outside lighting, and in this design that change in color was accented by the Cassandra Rakku tile supplied by www.glastile.com. Spiral Staircase Systems - Creates Glass Spiral Staircase in a New York City Loft

The homeowners request was simple:

We want a spiral staircase to go

through this hole without a center pole!

David with Spiral Staircase Systems Inc. took his customers request and created a work of art. He started with a 3D rendering to allow his customer to visualize their new staircase before anything was constructed. Once they approved the concept David was off to start the fabrication process in his shop located in Florida. It was in his shop that all the fabrication occurred, the only exceptions were the glass for the stair treads supplied by Seattle Glass Block, and the glass rails supplied by Precision Glass Bendin g.

In the initial construction phase this staircase was assembled in the front of their workshop, and being in Florida they had the door open most of the time. This staircase grabbed the attention of many passersby driving in front of the shop and on more than one occasion David and his co-workers heard the sounds of screeching tires as the drivers nearly failed to stop behind the traffic in front of them. Even in it's rough construction this staircase was turning heads.

The main structure was manufactured from steel that was sanded, shot blasted, and finished with a clear lacquer. The rails attached to the top of the glass were manufactured from stainless steel, and fitted onsite to appear completely seamless. The glass stair treads were made of clear tempered laminated glass with a ceramic traction control frit heat fused to the top surface. The traction control frit can be applied in different patterns and the pattern chosen on this project was the standard dot pattern.

The final product is truly a stunning work of art that adds a focal point to this New York City loft.

The 2" series, shown on the right have select stock window sizes that are ready for immediate shipment. Fire Guard Fire Rated Glass Block Windows 45 & 60 Minute Ratings

Seattle Glass Block is your certified Fire Guard window fabricator for any 45 or 60 minute rated window assembly. These windows are fully manufactured and ready for delivery. Once on site they simply fasten into place. UL requires the entire Fire Guard wood frame to be covered with 5/8" drywall to insulate and protect the wood from fire. This is to be done after the units are fastened into their openings.

Due to the weight factor the Fire Guard windows are limited to 12 sq. ft. Larger applications can be manufactured in sections and joined together at the job site. On-site assembly can be done for larger applications up to 120 sq. ft. including radius walls.

The following details illustrate the two positions the glass block can be installed into the wood frame for ease of finishing after it's installed into the framed opening. The Exterior detail is the most common and it's glass block position allows for your exterior sheeting and siding to be finished right up to the outside edge of the glass block. In the interior detail the glass block is positioned in the center of the wood frame to allow you to sheet rock equally right up to the glass block edge on each side.

IBP Structural Glass Stair Tread System

IBP has created a glass stair tread system which includes the glass, and the custom made brackets to make the installation of these floating glass stairs easy. The glass is made custom to the width that you require, up to a 48" inch maximum clear span.

Glass risers can also be incorporated into the design with an additional clip in bracket that makes even this installation a snap.

Each Assembly as pictured in the below photo ships complete with laminated glass including your choice of traction control frit for slip resistance, the brackets which are made of anodized aluminum and include the glass set screws and silicone cushion material to secure the glass to the bracket. The only thing not included would be the bolts required to mount the bracket to your wall or stringer.

Walk-able Glass Skylights for Decks

Day lighting is very important and highly desirable in the Pacific Northwest, and glass inserts used as decking is growing in popularity. In this example these sky lights are being used to transfer light into an outdoor living space below.

The large concrete pavers were installed VERY CAREFULLY after the glass was set on a rigid steel curbing, to create a perfectly flat and level surface for the glass to sit. It is important that the glass has a perfectly level surface to sit on because any uneven space will create a visible air pocket and can also create a point where the glass could flex, which can also cause a leak in the perimeter seal. The photo below illustrates the curbing before glass and pavers.

The steel was install over the wood framing after the waterproofing was applied to the deck and wood curb. The plywood you see in the above photo is only to cover up the fall hazard.

Glass Stairs Leading to Glass Flooring!

Glass Stair Treads and the IBP GlassWalk floor system were the perfect custom touch in this Northwest Washington residence.

With large floor to ceiling windows in front and behind this stair case and landing it was a great design feature to make the most of the light entering through the expansive windows. This glass staircase also allows those who enter the home to see right though them and beyond to the expansive view of Puget Sound.

One concern with glass when using them on a staircase is traction. Typically standard tempered glass is very smooth and offers little to no traction. The glass you see in this project actually offers traction control through a material we call traction control frit, and below is an example of the standard dot pattern.
